Re: Bob Knight
Haha, he's a hall of famer not in that category though. What makes you a good coach winning games, or championships? At some point once your program is built up you can pretty much get any player you need. Such as what Dean and K have done, I mean I watched a high school game last night, with Singler and Smith in it. Both are going to Duke, if you cant win with those guys your Matt Doherty. Of course recruiting goes into it as well, you have to be able to recruit to get these guys. I like to think that Wooden is number one by far, he could recruit and win after that throw them in a hat and pull a name out. K, Dean, Rupp, and Knight all about the same to me. Coach K has won one title since Grant Hill, granted thats one more than some will ever have, but it seems the game has caught up to him. It's not like it once was, he has to compete with many more teams for the top talent, and some of these big names he's getting are not panning out. Shavlick Randolph comes to mind, however I do think Duke will be very tough to handle in the next few years.

Re: Bob Knight
I totally agree. Take Knight as a prime example. He is someone who will not get the recruits he used to. Multiple reasons why, i.e. Indiana used to be a bball hotbed, Knights past demeanor, he doesn't allow for a flashy offense, you must play defense, and TT is not a bball draw yet for recruits, yet he stays fairly successfull.
I think Knight is a great coach. Colin Cowherd was talking down to him today because he has only had 1 NBA All-Star in the past like 15 years or something. I think that is crock, because I don't see any true NBA All-Stars in FL, and its not like they are a dime a dozen, or the NBA matters really.
Knight is a fundamentally sound as an Xs and Os coach as you will find. Plus you have to admire his graduation rates as well whether you agree with his demeanor or displinarian tactics. I think Wooden is the overall number 1 coach, but Knight is definitely in elite company.

Re: Bob Knight
Who gives a [censored] how many NBA all-stars he had? It isn't about that, otherwise he'd be an NBA coach.
-
Re: Bob Knight
the fact that he's only had 1 NBA all-star makes it even more amazing that he has the number of wins that he does

Re: Bob Knight
NCAA talent doesnt always mean NBA talent. Example Christian Laettner

Re: Bob Knight
As much as I hate CL, he was a good NBA role player. He wasnt a "star" but whatever team he was on, he did the role he was asked in the NBA.
Even in college basketball, its all about the players. These guys all got the players. Knight couldnt have got the same players at West Point as he did at Indiana, we see that with Texas Tech now. Indiana, Duke, UNC, Kentucky and UCLA dominated the scene way before most the posters on this forum where in PTA. You can see places like UCONN begin to slide in that group as well. They are great coaches, they also were great recruiters, which doesnt hurt when you have a certain school across your chest.

Re: Bob Knight
exactly, his whole career Bob Knight has coached his guys up...they weren't born with the physical gifts of players who went to other schools...Knight never had that 7-foot center who could take over a game like Chamberlain at Kansas or Alcindor at UCLA with Wooden, he had Isiah Thomas and that's about the extent of it...but he took players like Steve Alford and taught them the game well so they could compete on a high level even without the physical gifts...heck, look at the players he has right now at Texas Tech, anyone here think many high majors would take anyone on that team (with the exception of Jarius Jackson)?

Re: Bob Knight
I know you know basketball, but he had guys that could play. Play in his system more specifically, Allan Henderson, Damon Bailey, Isiah Thomas, Calbert Cheney and so on.
The motion offense he ran, you have to look no further than JJ Kelly to see an influence of Knight and all things he encompasses. Lean maybe the scence now in Indian land, but there was a time when it wasnt that way and they were very tough nosed sytle oriented players. I knew guys who went to Kelly for a year and left, who were very good ball players, but didint fit that system, Jon Hall comes to mind. Much like with Knigt, the guys could play, but you better be able to play within the system.
